Excerpt from the Fall 2025 Extension
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” That opening line from Charles Dickens’s Tale of Two Cities runs through my mind as I write to you.
Mostly, it’s the worst of times. The university has announced it will discontinue retiree emails on November 3, it has removed our website from the Wright State digital platform, and it is going to take away some of our online library privileges.
And yet, as my German professor used to say, “vee go on.”
We are gathering new email addresses from our members. If you have not yet done so, please send yours to WSURA at . It is very important that we get these addresses so that we can keep in contact with you electronically and so that we can record them in our next membership directory.
We have purchased a new domain name for our website (wsuretirees.org) and hope to have it up and running soon. We will transfer to that website the information we have stored on our old one—news of the association and the university, invitations to our events, information about our organization, and obituaries of our colleagues.
The following is an excerpt from an email for Jane Wildermuth, University Librarian:
“Under the new policy, emeritus faculty who are approved to retain their university email due to an active affiliation will also continue to receive these library privileges. If they are not approved, they will still be able to borrow materials from Dunbar and OhioLINK libraries. They will no longer have online access to our databases, e-journals, etc., unless they visit the Library in person and use a guest account available at the circulation desk. Right now, retired staff can borrow materials from Dunbar and OhioLINK libraries, but they don’t have access to our online databases, e-journals, and other digital resources. Under the new policy, retired staff will also be able to request and receive access to these online resources.”
I am on the Friends of the WSU Libraries Board, and I will do my best to represent our interests there. On the bright side, we had more than fifty people come to our annual fall picnic. It included free food, drink, and entertainment by the band Rude Scholar, led by a new retiree, Bobby Rubin. The Board will have a booth at the Employee Benefits and Wellness Fair on Wednesday, October 15, in the Student Union. And, we are planning events and presentations of various kinds. We look forward to seeing you!
