Ramaswamy wants to consolidate Ohio universities, but that may be a hard sell

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio gubernatorial hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy has proposed consolidating the state’s universities to promote excellence, but he may find that is more difficult than he envisions, experts say.

While higher education cuts may sound broadly appealing to voters and other politicians on the campaign trail, support ends when the cuts affect a specific voter.

“What people want for the system as a whole is not what they want for themselves and their children,” said Barrett Taylor, a professor at the University of North Texas who recently wrote a book about state higher education policy. “And that creates a tension there, even if there’s broad agreement that we need to close or consolidate or we need to manage more aggressively.”
