Some Wright State University professors say they are worried about changes to their tenure and discussions about restructuring colleges, as they face more challenges due to Ohio Senate Bill 1.
Gretchen McNamara, vice president of the Wright State American Association of University Professors and the Ohio president of the chapter of the AAUP, attended a College of Liberal Arts meeting recently during which she said dean Gary Schmidt said there is a possible reorganization and merging of colleges.
McNamara said administrators were discussing putting together a committee this summer and any possible changes would occur in the fall of 2027.
It’s not clear why the university is discussing this possibility. The College of Liberal Arts went through restructuring three years ago. The university does not appear to have financial concerns. WSU has continuously held a high Moody’s score, essentially a credit score for institutions, had three years of the highest score in Ohio on Senate Bill 6’s score, a state of Ohio financial scoring of public universities, and has seen steady enrollment since 2023.
Professors have not been given any details about committees. During a Faculty Senate meeting, provost Jim Denniston said the timeline was fall of 2027 for any changes.
