The filmed version of “Hadestown: The Musical,” preserved over three performances in London’s West End in 2025 and featuring the original Broadway principal cast, became the highest-grossing live show capture (of a live stage production) during its opening weekend.
Released Friday, July 24, the film, a must-see for musical theater devotees, made $10.2 million on 1,949 screens, surpassing “Hamilton” which brought in $10.1 million in September 2025.
Due to “extraordinary response and demand,” distributor Bleeker Street said its new event cinema label Crosswalk and partner LD Entertainment are expanding the initial five-day run and continuing to add dates and showtimes, according to Deadline. The film is reportedly expected to stay in movie theaters “indefinitely.”
The NEON, 130 E. Fifth St. in downtown Dayton, is among movie theaters benefitting from the expansion.
“We’re excited to bring this Tony-winning production to our screens – starring the original Broadway stars!,” said NEON Manager Jonathan McNeal. “This genre-defying show translates beautifully to the screen.”
2012 Wright State University graduate Joey Monda of Sing Out, Louise! Productions won his first Tony Award as co-producer of “Hadestown.” Since then he won two additional Tonys (“The Inheritance,” “A Strange Loop”) but said his “Hadestown” win will always be particularly meaningful.
